Matthew Coalter
Matthew Coalter is the son of Norman and Helen and was appointed Head Boy of Portora Royal School for the year 2013-14
Tell us about your early days.
I have lived my whole life in Enniskillen. I went to the Model Primary School and then Portora Royal. As a youngster I played football for Ballinamallard but nowadays I prefer rugby, playing for Portora First 15.
What are you presently doing/studying/career interests?
I’m currently studying for my A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Further Mathematics. It’s definitely hard work but it will be worth it when the results come out in August. I hope to study Medicine at university and then become a doctor. I think I’ve chosen this career path as I’m fascinated by science! I enjoy constantly learning and I aspire to work in a practical, challenging and caring profession.
What are your hobbies/interests?
At the minute I am really enjoying playing rugby for my school. Between this and my school work I have little time for much else! However, I volunteer in Ashbrooke Care Home and Willowbridge School during my free time. It is rewarding to help a wide range of people who need that extra support! I also watch a little TV and listen to music when I’m relaxing. During the warmer months I enjoy wakeboarding on Lough Erne. You might also see me working in Saddlers and at the odd wedding.
Describe your typical weekend.
On a Saturday I’d normally have a rugby match in the morning. Later I would spend time with my friends or my girlfriend and just relax after a busy week. On a Sunday, I help with teaching the senior Sunday school class with Karl. After this, I would do my homework for the weekend and then watch a bit of TV.
Do you travel/hope to travel?
I love to travel and have been very fortunate so far. I’ve visited America about six times in my life. Two of the most memorable times were when I went on the Ulster Project and then with my family when we toured California. The Ulster Project is a cross community project for teenagers where you live with an American family for a month in the summer. I went for the month of July in 2011 and made some great friends who came back to visit this year! Two years ago my family and I took two weeks to visit California. We saw San Francisco, Los Angeles and even Las Vegas. I have also taken part in a French exchange when I lived in Lyon with a family for a week last year. I think the thing I like most about travelling abroad is the weather. I love the sunshine and unfortunately we don’t get too much of that in Enniskillen.
Favourites in life?
Food: Probably a big steak cooked medium rare. Not sure where I get this from, maybe something to do with Saddlers!!
Music: Ed Sheeran, Bastille, anything easy going really.
Sports: Rugby, wakeboarding, skiing, American football.
Movies: Shooter, The Shawshank Redemption.
TV shows: Revenge, Dallas, and Homeland.
Animal: My cat Libby!
What is your best day?
My best day would involve skiing down a mountain in the French Alps with the sun shining. After this I’d go and sit in an outdoor hot tub and just relax! Then go to the restaurant with a few of my best friends and get a massive meal!
Have you a favourite Bible verse/hymn?
My favourite hymn would have to be ‘Abide with me’ by Henry Francis Lyte who was educated at Portora Royal School here in Enniskillen. Whenever I hear this in a public place (e.g. before the FA cup final) it makes me proud to be studying at the same school!
My favourite Bible verse would be Philippians 4:13. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This shows us that anything is possible as long as we believe.
