Mark Campbell
Mark is the son of Raymond and Hilary Campbell. He is a very familiar face at church and regularly helps out with Sunday School.
Tell us about your early days.
Mark John Stewart Campbell, or Mark, as many in the parish will know me. I was
born in Enniskillen and I am the third and youngest of three children of Raymond
and Hilary Campbell. I have two elder sisters Rachel and Rebecca. Being born in
Enniskillen, it was always inevitable that I would grow up and be educated in the “Happiest place to live in the UK.” Despite being a member of St. Macartin’s Cathedral, I wasn’t exactly christened within the Cathedral. I was born in 1996, the year in which the Cathedral was under renovation after a fire. Thus, Mark John Stewart Campbell was christened by the Rev. Brian Courtney as a member of St Macartin’s Cathedral, not within its walls, but rather the Cathedral Hall. As a young boy I found enjoyment in sport, and in particular in football. A devoted Tottenham Hotspur fan, and club member and captain of Ballinamallard Youth Football Club, I was constantly running around after a ball. In the Cathedral at a young age I attended Sunday School, Cubs, Beavers and Scouts and was a patrol leader of each organisation. As the years went by I was enrolled in Enniskillen Model Primary School as a young, blonde headed boy who was rather small back then. However, as a member of Sunday School and as a pupil at Enniskillen Model I became aware of the Christian faith through Sunday School lessons and singing many hymns during school assemblies. It wasn’t until I became a student of Portora Royal School and during confirmation classes that my faith began to develop and grow.
What are you presently doing/studying?
Currently I am a prefect in Portora Royal School, where I am in my final year. I hope to move on and further my education by enrolling in a University course in September 2014. In Portora I am studying History, English Literature and Religious Studies. Currently my work load is rather large as A Level examinations approach in the summer of this year. I hope to go on to study History as it is a huge passion of mine and to later take a post graduate course in Law.
What are your hobbies/interests?
I am very much a family orientated person and thoroughly enjoy time together with loved ones. I am a keen sports enthusiast and play football for Lisnaskea Rovers Youth and also compete for Portora Athletics Clubs in the 800m in Ulster and Irish Championships during the spring and summer months. Outside school hours I enjoy spending time with family and friends on Lough Erne, water skiing and wakeboarding on our family boat.
Do you travel/hope to travel?
I love to travel, be it as far as the corner shop on the Tempo Road or to The United States of America. In the summer of 2011 I was selected to take part in the Enniskillen Ulster Project to Madison, Indiana. I loved every minute of the experience, especially as I enjoy the summer heat and sun. In the future I hope to venture across the world and experience new cultures, languages and faiths. I am really lucky to have spent many happy holidays with my family abroad.
Favourites in life
There are a lot of thing I enjoy, especially sport and family. As a life-long and faithful Tottenham Hotspur fan, I have been able to strengthen my faith in Christianity, particularly in prayer, perseverance and more so in having a lot of patience when it comes to having faith in my boyhood team. Many of you may not know this but I am a real sucker for old Western movies, in particular John Wayne films. Where this originated, I am not quite sure, but since Dad usually had control of the remote I guess I began to get engaged and enjoy the films as I never really had the choice of what to watch. My particular favourite John Wayne films are ‘The Searchers’ and ‘The Quiet Man.’
Have you a favourite Bible verse/Hymn?
My favourite hymn is ‘Abide With Me’, one of the most famous Christian hymns, written by a former Portoran Henry Francis Lyte. This hymn is a prayer for God to remain present with the speaker throughout life, through trials, and through death.
My favourite bible verse is Psalm 23:4, as it’s message means a lot to me personally: ‘Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.’ It is a real motivational verse and allows one to have comfort in the darkest of times.
Any challenges?
To spend more time throughout the day in God’s work and to be a guide to the younger generation, particularly in Sunday School and Xplore, in fighting the good fight and keeping the faith.
